Polyphonic Music
Going back to the origin of the word polyphony, it comes from the Greek, which means “several voices”. This music technique includes several voices that relate to each other in a harmonic way, creating a melody. Interestingly, this was the segment most used by musicians in the late Middle Ages and Renaissance.
However, the first songs composed were only developed on a voice, linear and accompanied by a single rhythm. Homophonic music was thus linked for a long time to religious music with only one melody, forming Cantus Firmus and Cantus Gregorian.
